Compare research agent workflows

Before delegating a research brief, decide how information reaches the final report—and which claims a person must check.

CrewAI Sequential Research Crew — curated tutorial. A researcher gathers information; an analyst receives that task's output and prepares a report. The official example makes the handoff explicit through task context. Official tutorial.

Magentic-One — curated research system. An Orchestrator coordinates WebSurfer, FileSurfer, Coder and ComputerTerminal. Its web and file specialists support gathering information across sources. This is a generalist system, not a dedicated citation-verification workflow. Paper, November 2024.

What to compare

  • Handoff: a sequential research-to-report pipeline versus an orchestrator choosing specialist tools.
  • Traceability: require a source URL and supporting passage for each material claim. This is a review checklist, not a capability verified for both examples.
  • Human review: check source dates, contradictory evidence and whether the conclusion follows. Neither cited design establishes that your report has received human review.

Unknown: accuracy on your topic, completeness of citations, present-day cost and deployment results. These examples support an architecture comparison, not a ranking of research quality. Neither is presented as a verified customer deployment.

Sources checked 16 September 2026. The CrewAI tutorial currently resolves to v1.15.21; its JSON-first syntax differs from older catalog examples, while the researcher-to-analyst context handoff remains documented. Magentic-One refers to the 2024 paper.
